As a younger man, Ted was an amature boxer.
Ted had dobermans that he raised, seeing-eye-dogs for the blind.
Ted was a very strong union member and supporter.
I can remember as a young girl when he wrote letters to my mother, he would always write something to me too. Generally he would have a new word for me to define and later wanted me to use it in a sentence when mom wrote a letter back to him.
I can also remember him coming to our house to visit my mother, he usually came at 11 PM he was a night owl since he worked the night shift at the Detroit Free Press for so many years. But my mom would cook dinner for him at midnight just the same. It was usually mashed potatoes and steak.

Source: 1930 US Federal Census Record Belleville Township, Republic County, Kansas.
Notes: Nina "Ethylene" Gates -(wife of Hopkins (Hop) Sanders)
was was born in Virden, Illinois, to James and Hattie May Gates, in September of 1885.
The Gates family came to Courtland in 1900. Ethylene was a school teacher and after her marriage to Hopkins (Hop) Sanders June, 11, 1902, she continued to be very active in the Methodist Church and various clubs in the city. Fannie Lucille Mudge, Waldron Gates Sanders, and Delmar Armand Sanders were their three children. These children all graduated from the Courtland school.
Hopkins (Hop) Sanders was born April 6, 1880, and died December 15, 1959. He was the son of Dan and Isabelle (Belle) Sanders of Mankato, Kansas, and one of the five children of the Sanders family to attend school in Mankato. He came to Courtland with his parents while quite young. As early as 1898 Hop operated the Jennings Photo Galley. Later he and Frank Vishnefske of Belleville, Kansas, invented the Smile A Minute Photo Gallery and traveled around the country with carnivals and attended fairs in the area.
This Smile A Minute business was located in Salina, Kansas, in later years and is still there. He was in business with his brother, A. J. Sanders in 1901. They had a clothing and general store. Hop operated a photograph gallery in 1903 and in 1907 he was a partner with his brother, Charlie, in Sanders Cash Store. This venture did not last long and Hop went to Hall Summitt and Charley moved to California.
In 1908 Hop was a traveling salesman for a shoe company in Texas, and by 1914 Hop was back in Courtland and again in the grocery business, the Sanders Sanitary Market. February 26, 1914, Hop's store was the scene of a fire and Hop left and went to Montana. He did not stay long and came back with the information that there was not a homestead within 40 to 50 miles of railroad. Hop sold his store in 1924 to Fred Noller of Mankato, Kansas, but later he took it over again and in 1954, due to ill health, he sold his store and locker plant to Ernest Dicke and wife Edna.
Fannie Gates Shaffer, sister of Ethylene Sanders, taught piano in Belleville. Anona Blackburn remembers taking piano lessons from her at that time Fannie and her mother, Hattie Mae Gates both had pianos in the house and both gave lessons. Fannie later lived in Courtland and taught in the Courtland School System
